The Winter School in Accessibility with ThyssenKrupp Encasa (4-7 December 2012) had as main objective an in depth research on the theme of accessibility and usability of historical buildings with a high cultural value.

A cue was taken from one of the topics covered in the PhD program in Civil Engineering and Architecture at the Engineering Faculty of Pavia and from the collaboration with ThyssenKrupp Encasa, a company that has been working for years in the construction sector to improve accessibility in buildings. The aim is to encourage students' attention to the difficult challenge of making existing buildings more accessible and usable while respecting their historical-architectural peculiarities. These are the aspects on which 24 students, from the University of Pavia, from the Adrianea Academy of Architecture and Archeology, from the University of Cagliari and from the Polytechnic of Turin, worked together once they were admitted to the Winter School.

Six groups of students worked under the guidance of a Tutor to propose comprehensive solutions to improve the accessibility to the building. The project by Politecnico di Torino group won the prestigious First Prize.

The award ceremony was held in public in the Great Hall of the University; and then, an itinerant exhibition of all the projects developed was set up in each of the participating Universities.
